Dementia UK – 30 Miles September Challenge

Both my mum and dad very sadly suffered from vascular dementia before their passing – dad in 2014 and mum in August last year. Two days after the first anniversary of losing mum, I received an email from Dementia UK informing me of the 30 Mile Challenge and they invited me to take part. I thought about if for about a minute and I absolutely jumped at the chance! I got myself signed up and I eagerly awaited the arrival of my # Team Dementia t-shirt. The timing was so perfect – it really felt like the right thing to do to honour mum and dad.

Paul and I already had a holiday booked in September in North Yorkshire for a week staying in a village called Staithes not far from Whitby. In the first 10 days of September, I had already walked about 20 miles and Yorkshire added another 26 miles to this total. Paul bought me a portable pedometer that I keep with me at all times and I record my steps at the end of each day on a spreadsheet. I have found a step conversion program online that calculates my mileage. The only downside is it requires me to put in my weight! To date, I’ve walked just over 51 miles and this total will hopefully increase before the end of September

I set up a Whats App group on the evening of me signing up to the challenge. Within 10 minutes of sending out my initial message, I had been pledged about £100. This total has been steadily increasing throughout September. My promised donations now stand at £380. I have been absolutely overwhelmed with everybody’s support and generosity.

If anyone would still like to make a donation, ask me or Sue Hiley to send my Just Giving page link by email.

Alternatively, I can give anyone wishing to donate, my bank account details and I will transfer the money to my Just Giving page myself.

I’m sure mum and dad would have been very touched with the love and support shown to me by everyone – thank you so much Nicky
